Moving
to Arkansas - Tax Guide

tax guide prepared by the Arkansas Department of Finance and
Administration's Revenue Division
Taxpayer Assistance Office to acquaint new residents with state tax laws.
Taxes:
Local Sales Tax:
Arkansas state sales tax is 5.125%. The city of Fort Smith adds 2.0%*
and Sebastian county adds another 1.25% for a total of 8.375%.
* collected on the first $2,500 of a single purchase sale.
Corporate Income Tax:
The tax in Arkansas is based on net income and is adjusted by a formula
that determines how much of the income is applicable to the Arkansas operation.
The rate is on a scale of 1 to 6 percent on the first $100,000 of taxable
income. Net taxable income greater than $100,000 is taxed at 6.5 percent
of the entire amount of the total income.
Property Taxes:
Arkansas does not have a state property tax. Arkansas' cities and counties
collect a property tax as their principal source of revenue. The tax is
calculated on 20 percent of fair market value.
Education:
Three local Fort Smith schools were recently honored with 2001 Blue Ribbon
distinctions awarded by the Arkansas Department of Education. Barling,
Euper Lane and Sunnymede were among five elementary schools selected from
across the state for outstanding efforts in education. There are over
608 schools in Arkansas, and three of the top five were from the Fort
Smith School District. Euper Lane has won the award three times, and Barling
and Sunnymede are first time recipients since the award began in 1982.
The recipients join Ballman, Cook, Orr, Trusty and Woods Elementary Schools
as past Fort Smith winners.
On May 23, 2000, Southside High School in Fort Smith
was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue
Ribbon School -- the only secondary school in Arkansas to win the distinction
in 2000. Southside is one of the few secondary schools nationwide to have
been named a National Blue Ribbon School three times! (1983, 1987, 2000).
